The aim of this website is to supply the plastic modeler and historian with some basic colour and markings information regarding South African military equipment through the years. It also supplies information regarding our books, posters and decals.

STEFAAN BOUWER

Born in Pretoria in 1954, Stefaan Bouwer moved with his parents to Johannesburg at an early age, completing his schooling at Jan Cilliers Primary School, and Hoer Seunskool Helpmekaar where he matriculated in 1972.
It was as a child that he developed a passion for aviation history that has lasted his entire life. His eyesight prevented him from joining the South African Air Force as a pilot when he left school and he enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand Medical School in 1973, completing his undergraduate studies in 1978.
His postgraduate career has included National Service with the South African Medical Services.  Being a recipient of the Honoris Crux medal for bravery during his service in the military.
Entering private practice in 1987 he currently practices as an ENT surgeon in the Johannesburg area.
Stefaan has written several books and publications on the SAAF and has been a co-author of a number of significant works including The SAAF at War which he co-wrote with his lifelong friend and former SAAF pilot, Martin Louw.
Stefaan has also helped and co-authored SA Colours & Markings Book No 4. This latest cooperative work with Gerald Thompson, The Aegean Pirates, is the culmination of many years of research into SAAF history.

This A4, 260 plus page hardcover book covers the history of 15 Squadron SAAF from its inception until the end of WWII.  With more than 300 photographs its starts with a raid on Watussi, journeys through East Africa, the Western Desert and the Italian Campaign.  The authors discuss the colours and markings of all the aircraft variants used, and is augmented by colour profiles of camouflage as the role of the aircraft changed.  It also has all the aircraft serial numbers that flew operational, as well as a detailed Roll of Honour and a substantial Nominal Role.
